Kyle listened, took her hand, and responded with "You did the right thing asking for help. You know the world is a much better place with you in it."
I brought my teenage daughter into the emergency department for medical clearance for an inpatient psych stay for self-harm. From the moment we arrived, all the staff were kind, quick, and efficient. Kyle was a reassuring presence not only for me as a mother, but was thoughtful and patient with my daughter. I am a traveling registered nurse and have worked in the ER. I know how chaotic the department can be. When the roles were reversed and I was the family member instead of the nurse, he made me feel at ease; more importantly, he made my daughter feel heard and cared about. I sat and watched as they examined her self-harm lacerations. I listened to the open-ended questions we are all taught to ask, I've heard them, I've asked them a million times. When my child told Kyle she had a plan to harm herself and how she would do it, I felt like I couldn't breathe, but Kyle listened and took her hand and responded with "You did the right thing asking for help. You know the world is a much better place with you in it." I will never forget that moment, and I myself plan to incorporate that in my own practice moving forward. Thank you to all of the emergency department staff for your kindness and care of my child and to Kyle for being a fantastic nurse.
