A female veteran came into specialty clinic for cardiology and endocrinology appointments. Nicole Pfeil was the nurse who roomed the veteran that day. After speaking with her, the veteran stated she was 'hungry', new to the area, and had not lived here long enough to receive the assistance she needed for food, income needs, etc. Nicole also noticed that the veteran had a significant weight loss from prior recordings due to lack of adequate food, meals, income, etc.

This was during nurses' week at the VA. Nicole not only gave the veteran the hoagie that was intended to be her own, but also contacted numerous resources to inquire about getting help with food insecurity for this veteran. Nicole also packed up the remaining food from her co-workers' nurses' luncheon (with approval). Nicole was also able to acquire a gas card for the veteran as she was worried about getting home that day and lived a distance away.

After finding the resources needed, Nicole also took the time to help carry the boxes of food to the veteran's car, helping her load everything. Nicole spent a great amount of time and was persistent in making sure this veteran had her essential needs taken care of and showed compassion for this female veteran. Nicole Pfeil truly gave extraordinary care that day, going 'above and beyond' with exceptional care and service.
