I was in a near-fatal car accident that left me a paraplegic. Now, I have encountered many different types of care in a hospital setting. Jessica Owens looked at me as more than just a patient, but as a human being. She took the time to remind me who I was, in a moment when I desperately needed it. Jessica initially remembered me from my admission when I was at my peak sickness and anxiety. She shared with me tonight that she had noticed my smile despite my situation, and that touched her. She continued by calling me an inspiration for who I am to my core, and that touched me more than I can articulate. Jessica called attention to my smile, not my wheelchair, my grit, not my accident, my positivity, not my diagnosis. She saw me stripped away from all the superficial things. That is so rare, and it felt incredibly good to be seen. Jessica’s heart is gold, and her care as a nurse reflects that. She is bright, attentive, empathetic, genuine, and the list goes on. Any patient who has Jessica leaves a better person.
