Kevin gave me full explanations of all procedures that he was going to be doing and continued to explain how this is a typical insertion and not to be alarmed. Everything went fine and I was really happy.
I was at the VA Pittsburgh over Memorial Day weekend. Kevin Kunkle was the original nurse that took care of me four months ago when I came out of a Urology procedure. He instructed me and guided me concerning all the different procedures necessary to take care of myself. Honestly, I had a hard time looking at the hole in my gut. It seemed really weird because it’s not an injury that you get in the service but nevertheless something I have to deal with.
I’ve been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and that in itself doesn’t allow me normal use of my bladder, so I had to go through this procedure. The last thing you want to do is have a bag tied your leg the entire rest of your life, but with his compassion and support Kevin made it easier on my brain. That was the preliminary reason why I know Kevin. At my current appointment, Kevin took extra care of my catheter and cleaned me very well using a certain fluid which was like an antibiotic to kill any germs through my stomach into my bladder which made me feel more comfortable. Kevin gave me full explanations of all procedures that he was going to be doing and continued to explain how this is a typical insertion and not to be alarmed. Everything went fine and I was really happy. He then did one more thing that was really, to me, above the call of duty.
I use an electric wheelchair, and I had been complaining to him as he was doing his work, about how I was concerned about some things on the chair. Without any hesitation, he went from a clinical side, being a nurse, to a DIY mechanic. He then looked at the wheelchair and excused himself. He surprised me by coming back with an array of screwdrivers and wrenches. I was having a problem with the electrical buttons so he continued to check the controls and find out why there was a short. He was able to figure out what was wrong which made me feel comfortable, knowing that my wheelchair worked like new. I was so happy, to put it mildly. I asked him if there was anything I could do to pay him back? My other nurse made me aware that I could nominate him for a DAISY Award online. Thank you very much for your time. I appreciate it very much.
