Even though the patient was minimally communicating, he smiled through the whole bath and shave. His wife woke up happy and said, “he finally looks like my husband again.”
Ellen provided excellent care to a patient and his family at end-of-life.

The patient had been in the hospital for a few weeks. Ellen noticed his facial hair was getting long and asked his wife if he usually shaved his face. His wife said he was always clean-shaven and that she was sure his facial hair was bothering him.

Based on this feedback, Ellen gave him a spa bath while his wife was asleep. She spent over an hour washing his hair, heating and reheating water, and shaving his beard. Even though the patient was minimally communicating, he smiled through the whole bath and shave. His wife woke up happy and said, “he finally looks like my husband again.”

The patient passed away peacefully two nights later. His family was so thankful that Ellen helped bring normalcy and dignity in his final days.
