This nurse constantly displays incredible ownership and responsibility of their duties as a nurse. While I was on this unit today, I witnessed this nurse completely rock their role as a nurse and felt compelled to share. I had visited a patient who was very upset with what he described as a lack of communication. He was in a tough spot with his NPO status and the only way for a plan to take place and his care to move forward was to wait and see if his symptoms settled down a little bit. He was hungry, emotional, and very intense when I spoke with him. I sought out the nurse in hopes of them being able to answer one of the many things going through the patient's mind. They explained to me that they were headed into his room and would talk to him. I proceeded to listen to this nurse not only thoroughly and effectively explain his plan of care, but also bring his heightened emotions down immensely. This nurse began asking questions about his life and what he did for a living, and she related that to his care while in the hospital. They not only delivered the status of his health to him in a communicative and understanding way but also did it with kindness and intentionality. This nurse brought someone who was speaking in a less than compassionate tone 5 minutes ago, down to a thankful and attentive patient. When I was discussing this with the nurse after, they acted as if it were no big deal and an easy act; however, this nomination is to say that it was important. Even though it was something they felt was small and unimportant, to me it was largely inspiring, and I hope that everyone can take a page out of this nurse's book no matter their role!​
