Emilia left the experience deeply moved, having developed an even stronger sense of empathy and understanding for patient advocacy — a hallmark of what it means to be a nurse.
I would like to recognize Emilia Lang, West Bend nursing student for the Spring 2025 MPTC daisy award. During our third semester clinical course, Emilia Lang demonstrated the exceptional qualities of a DAISY nurse while caring for a middle-aged patient with complex health conditions. Emilia was assigned to this patient during a pivotal and emotionally challenging time — he and his wife made the courageous decision to transition to hospice care during her shift.
Emilia approached the situation with maturity, compassion, and professionalism well beyond her years. She provided care with remarkable sensitivity, offering the patient and his wife a supportive and nonjudgmental environment as they processed this life-altering decision. Throughout the shift, she displayed a calm presence and offered empathetic communication, which was deeply appreciated by the family. Later in the day, while Emilia was assisting with another patient, the patient’s wife — a former nurse herself — expressed a heartfelt desire to formally recognize Emilia for embodying the characteristics of an extraordinary nurse. She noted Emilia’s empathy, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to patient-centered care.
At the end of her shift, both the patient and his wife hugged Emilia, thanking her for her presence, care, and kindness during such a vulnerable time. In addition to this clinical moment, Emilia has consistently shown strong leadership among her peers. She leads by example with professionalism, integrity, and kindness. She is always eager to expand her knowledge, both in clinical practice and within the classroom, seeking out opportunities to improve and support those around her. Her passion for nursing and commitment to growth make her a role model for others in our program.
