I am nominating the Perioperative Team based on their contribution of time, energy, and talent that resulted in enhanced safety practices to benefit both our patients and employees. In addition to promoting quality and safety, the work on this project empowered the staff to use their voices to make a difference in how they practice the art and science of nursing, resulting in the team becoming empowered and engaged, contributing to a culture of excellence. This work began when concerns were identified with students' training in the Operating Room. Lack of knowledge for safe handling of sharps, improper passing of sutures, and other best practices for intraoperative safety measures were the drivers for the work of this team. The team members reviewed the literature and created a training program for students to educate and promote sharps safety. They measured the outcomes of their work, including a reduction in needlesticks, and were able to showcase their work through a poster presentation at the National AORN conference! Becoming engaged and creating change contributes to happy staff, and happy staff helps to improve the overall patient experience!
