Upon meeting Jennifer, I got a distinct feeling that she deeply cared about my father and me. After talking briefly, she understood where I was coming from, where my dad was, and what unique challenges we were facing. She was gentle but resolute. I felt comfortable sharing personally significant information, and she once again met me where I was. She responded to my openness in turn and made me comfortable expressing my emotions without concern. She also kept things moving, and our interactions were never belabored. A day or so later, I was getting something from my car as she was arriving at work. She greeted me and even waited a moment despite the cold so we could walk together. I realized that this was her last personal moment before working a long shift, and I didn't want to impose, but she asked me how my father and I were doing, and I gave her a little update. It was a quick walk, but I was relieved when she came to my father's room later and said she would be his nurse for the day. His other care providers seemed somewhat silo'd and I was struggling to meet everyone on the same wavelength. Jennifer recognized my father and his family's wishes and provided the lynchpin to realize his dying wish to remain in his hometown and not be sent to a facility in a neighboring state. She identified that he had aspirated food and helped us communicate that fact to his physician, which allowed him to receive further care. As anticipated, he passed away peacefully in his hometown two days later with family present. Without Jennifer's astute observation, assessment, and action, I believe my father would have been sent to a distant rehab facility with every expectation of being bounced to another hospital even further from his cherished Northeast Kingdom, Vermont. Jennifer's attention, assertiveness, and professionalism made a big difference, and I am forever grateful.
