"Nurse Cooper contacted the dispatched deputy and shared important details. She and the responding deputy were able to discuss a “soft approach” to the Veteran that would not be traumatizing,” said one of Cooper’s coworkers regarding her interaction with a patient. “She also confirmed that the Veteran would be transported to a mental health facility, as was in the Veteran’s best interest, versus a hospital emergency room. Due to this careful coordination, the deputy, who was a Veteran himself, was able to establish rapport with the Veteran and de-escalate the situation successfully, and ultimately transport the Veteran safely to the psychiatric care facility that Nurse Cooper had previously contacted."
