She made me feel the most comfortable. Every single time Olga would see me trying to get my baby to latch, she would make eye contact and signal me that she would be coming to help.
My husband and I welcomed our first baby recently. At the 24 hour newborn screening we were rushed to NICU due to a drop in my baby’s oxygen. As a first-time parent, I was so scared and anxious. I was trying to breastfeed and didn’t know what I was doing. Being in an open room, not knowing how to get my screaming baby to latch, strangers and other babies are all around us, absolutely no privacy, and feeling so overwhelmed. I told our night shift nurse that I was having trouble, and she offered a bottle. I was a first-time mom and overwhelmed and scared for my baby, and felt so vulnerable around so many people. My husband and I fed the formula to our baby, and kept doing it for the rest of the night.

Day shift came, and Olga came to us with the biggest, warmest smile. My husband and I felt immediate comfort from the moment she introduced herself. She asked what my plan for feeding was, and I told her I wanted to breastfeed but was having trouble. She immediately helped and brought me a privacy screen and kept helping me latch my baby. I could tell she wanted to help, not because she had to, but she truly wanted to. She shared her own personal story about wishing she could have breastfed her baby, but was unable to. She made me feel the most comfortable. Every single time Olga would see me trying to get my baby to latch, she would make eye contact and signal me that she would be coming to help. I remember feeling so emotional, but then I felt so relieved that she cared enough to help me. I would have 100% given up on breastfeeding if it wasn’t for Olga.

When I tell the story of my baby, I have to mention Olga. Everyone I work with knows about Olga, and our family knows about Olga. She is a part of my baby’s story. I get emotional when I talk about her because she has no idea of the impact she has had on me, my husband, my baby, and my breastfeeding journey. She was the most amazing, compassionate nurse we encountered during our stay. Thank you SO much for everything, Olga. My baby girl is 3 months old and is still breastfed and as healthy as ever!
