She made sure her patients were well cared for. She educated me on medications, procedures, orders, protocols, and, unknowingly, emotional awareness.
From the current climate of America's healthcare system, nurses are often asked to give everything they have. They're asked to give their time, their mental and emotional health. They're asked to give their bodies, blood, sweat, and tears. Going through nursing school, it has become more and more evident that, sometimes, even that isn't enough. To be a nurse, you subconsciously take an oath to dedicate your life to this profession. Even if you have very little left for yourself. That selflessness does not always come easy. However, Suprisia was the epitome of selflessness that day. She came into work, she was the charge nurse, and she still taught me. She guided me on the steps to becoming the best nurse possible. She made sure her patients were well cared for. She educated me on medications, procedures, orders, protocols, and, unknowingly, emotional awareness. What I didn't know at the time was that Suprisia was navigating her own grief while simultaneously ensuring her patients and their families felt none. Suprisia had just suffered an immense loss in her family. Yet, she came to work focused and capable. She was the most resilient person I had ever met at that moment. Grief is so challenging to manage on your own. Let alone carry it with you into a field that demands everything of you. Suprisia covered the floor when needed. One of her nurses even got physically ill, and she still managed the shift with grace. I am still unsure of the specialty I want to pursue. However, one thing I am sure about is, I want to be a nurse as selfless, resilient, educated, and compassionate as Suprisia.
