She felt compassion for a patient when most people would typically view the patient as very problematic.
Rebecca, or Becky, as we all refer to her, has been nothing but welcoming, compassionate, and supportive since the day I met her. I remember a time when Becky was charge nurse, and I just so happened to have been given a very bad assignment with two critically ill patients. Without any prompting from me, Becky's first question was, "Jenn, do you need help? What can I help you with?"
To this day, in all the shifts I've worked with Becky, she's always been the type of person to ask others how she can support them, and she has always been exceedingly helpful regardless of how many tasks she herself has to juggle. Even when she trained me as a charge nurse, she always made sure that I was following along with everything she was teaching me and would take the time to clarify things that I was confused about.
Even when it comes to the patients, Becky always goes above and beyond for all of her patients. She sees them as more than just patients, but rather as humans with a story to share, as we all should.
I remember a particularly difficult patient on the unit who had to be restrained due to Alzheimer's, and rather than judging the actions of this patient, Becky took it upon herself during her free time to read the patient's living will and to try to understand the patient better. She felt compassion for a patient when most people would typically view the patient as very problematic.
Throughout all this, she has continued to remain humble. In fact, it was my very first time ever having received a text from a preceptor asking me to judge her performance and give her feedback.
She always aims to improve herself and is fully dedicated to her role as a nurse, so because of her performance as both a charge nurse and a floor nurse, I fully believe that she's deserving of The DAISY Award.
