During our conversation, she shared that she wasn't shopping for herself, but for a patient she had cared for early in her nursing career, someone she's continued to support and encourage over the years.
On a random Saturday afternoon, I was out shopping at a local department store when I recognized a nurse from UMMC. Although we had never officially met, I was certain I had seen her around campus a few times over the years. While waiting in the checkout line, I took a moment to introduce myself. We exchanged pleasantries and reflected briefly on our time at UMMC. During our conversation, she shared that she wasn't shopping for herself, but for a patient she had cared for early in her nursing career, someone she's continued to support and encourage over the years. She wasn't in scrubs, and I soon realized this was her day off. She explained that her patient had faced many hurdles in life. She shared that she regularly brings her small gifts, typical things any teenage girl would appreciate. What touched me most was hearing that same day, she had visited the patient in the hospital not only to drop off some items she had previously bought but also to check clothing sizes to ensure a perfect fit. She described how excited and grateful the patient was, not only for the gifts, but for the expected visit from a familiar face. It is nurses like Tammy Roberts who remind me why nursing is the most trusted profession, and why I am proud to be a nurse at UMMC. Thank you, Tammy. On that ordinary Saturday, you did more than brighten a patient's day; you inspired a colleague. Your kindness and exemplary compassion will not be forgotten.
