Working in such a challenging environment, Kelsey’s genuine and empathetic demeanor breaks down barriers, fostering meaningful connections with patients who often face significant distrust or trauma.
I am honored to nominate Kelsey Styskal, RN, for the DAISY Award. Kelsey exemplified the qualities of an exceptional nurse and is a true role model to her colleagues and peers. Her unwavering compassion extends not only to the Veterans she serves but also to her coworkers, making her an invaluable asset to our team.
Kelsey consistently goes above and beyond to ensure the well-being of her patients. She willingly stays late or comes in early to provide necessary care, often prioritizing her Veterans’ needs above her own. She is known to forgo lunch breaks and skip team outings to address urgent patient concerns, demonstrating her selflessness and commitment to service. She voluntarily took on extra curriculum to better serve her Veterans including a Mental Health Board certification in Nursing and to become a lead coordinator for Care Coordination and Integrated Case Management to improve collaboration, communication and coordination within an integrated healthcare system to elevate the standard of healthcare delivery for Veterans.
Her dedication to supporting her colleagues is equally remarkable. Kelsey is the first to offer assistance when a coworker is overwhelmed, taking on additional responsibilities with a positive and collaborative attitude. On a personal level, she is a steadfast friend who encourages others to prioritize their well-being, even when she neglects her own in the process.
Kelsey’s compassion is not confined to her professional role; it extends to her personal life, where she provides care and support to her family and in-laws with the same kindness and dedication she shows her patients. Nursing is not just a profession for Kelsey- it is a reflection of her values and the way she approaches every aspect of her life.
Her ability to build trust with the vulnerable population served by the Homeless clinic is extraordinary. Working in such a challenging environment, Kelsey’s genuine and empathetic demeanor breaks down barriers, fostering meaningful connections with patients who often face significant distrust or trauma. Her dedication to ensuring that every individual receives the care they need is unmatched, and when outcomes are less than ideal, it is clear that she carries the weight of those challenges with deep empathy and resolve.
Kelsey’s presence in our clinic has been a blessing. Despite the difficulties inherent in our work, she remains steadfast in her mission to care for and serve the most vulnerable members of our community. Her unwavering compassion, resilience, and commitment set a standard of excellence that inspires everyone around her.
For all these reasons and more, Kelsey Styskal, RN, embodies the qualities of an outstanding nurse, coworker, and friend, and we are fortunate to have her as part of our team.
