Being a long-time nurse and nurse educator myself, I can tell you, you have a true gem in Madison. A true patient advocate and pure soul that fully exemplifies what a nurse should be.
I am contacting you regarding a recent unfortunate event that happened with my father-in-law. He suffered a cardiac arrest at home and was transported to RMC in Anniston after paramedics were able to regain pulses. Unfortunately, his down time left him with minimal brain activity, and he was only able to be kept alive on a ventilator and IV cardiac medications. Our family ultimately made the decision to discontinue life support as he was determined to have minimal brain activity. As a 30+ year nurse and paramedic, I needed to pass along the competent, and more importantly, compassionate care he and our family received at your facility. The doctor in the ER as well as the other staff, kept our family informed and comforted. He was eventually transferred to the ICU, and we would be remiss in not calling out one of the most incredible and caring ICU nurses I have encountered in my entire career.
Madison was our nurse the day we made the difficult call to end life support. She was informative, made sure I promptly got all the information we needed from all the specialists to make this difficult decision, ensured my school-age daughters were able to come in and say their final goodbyes in a manner that they wouldn't be embarrassed around other visitors, but also in a manner that they would not be traumatized by extraneous medical equipment. She professionally handled a conflict our family had with an EXTREMELY unprofessional organ procurement representative from Legacy of Hope to ensure we would not have contact with him any further. Being a long-time nurse and nurse educator myself, I can tell you, you have a true gem in Madison. A true patient advocate and pure soul that fully exemplifies what a nurse should be. The mid-level made an incredibly awful day better as well. They kept us informed as well, didn't extend false hope, and instead compassionately provided all the information needed to make the hardest decision easier. Thank you to all the RMC staff, because I wish a fraction of my current staff understood what excellent patient care was, the way that this team did.
