Our son is on the autism spectrum and had fallen out of his sensory swing and needed stitches to his eyebrow and chin. He was in a lot of pain and distress when we arrived at the ER after about a 30-minute drive. Our nurse Brett, brought in a couple of different fidget toys for our son to help calm him. Brett revealed to us that he is also on the autism spectrum and knows that stimming helps him to calm down during stressful/overwhelming situations. Brett was a very calm and knowledgeable asset to my son's care team the whole time we were in the ER, and he also answered several questions later in the day when I called back with concerns. I couldn’t have been more impressed with Brett, and it was really reassuring to know that someone was caring for my son who identified with and understood him in ways that I could not. He made a traumatic experience go more smoothly than it had any right to, and our family could not be more thankful.
