Every single time he enters the unit, it is with a positive attitude and a determination to make sure he makes every single new nurse to the ICU feel welcomed and at ease.
There's a terrible theory that Nurses eat their young. I entered the Surgical Intensive Care unit as an almost 40-year-old, brand-new nurse, with no ICU experience. I have never been more afraid, but also never more eager to be successful with learning something new in my life. Ramases Patterson Jr. was the very first welcoming face I encountered during my orientation. He told me that they were glad to have me there, and after a week of feeling overwhelmed and having self-doubt, I did not understand at that moment the gem that St. John's Surgical ICU possessed in Ramases. That single encounter with him exemplified who Ramases is as a person. Every single time he enters the unit, it is with a positive attitude and a determination to make sure he makes every single new nurse to the ICU feel welcomed and at ease. I understand that the DAISY Award is traditionally about the great care that individuals show toward patients. What I want people to understand is that the confidence that Ramases instills in new orientees is what enables those orientees to become great nurses, and in turn, project that on our patients. I am a believer that nurses cannot be great on the front line if the behind-the-scenes environment is in chaos. Ramases is an amazing charge nurse, preceptor, pressure injury turn buddy, and he crushes the stigma that Nurses eat their young. I am excited to see what his future holds, and I would hope that you would please consider recognizing and awarding Ramases with a DAISY Award.
