I have never seen a nurse who went beyond in the care of a patient, treating you like family and making you feel heard and safe, like Ross.
I would like to nominate Ross, who works on the inpatient unit at EMCH. In January my brother was diagnosed with ALS and was admitted to the ER at EMCH. It quickly became evident that transferring him on to further care was not a viable option and wouldn’t help. The ER doctor and nurses were all so caring and patient with my brother, even when he was belligerent. None of us knows what oxygen starvation feels like or what our reactions might be. My brother was admitted to inpatient at EMCH. Ross was the RN on duty and very quickly became a friend to all of us. He was very caring, interactive, and went above and beyond his normal duties for us. Ross took time to answer questions over and over when my brother couldn’t remember and never showed irritation, impatience, or any signs of wishing he was anywhere but in that room. My brother hadn’t trimmed his nails in quite some time and Ross found some nail clippers and trimmed and filed his nails for him. Ross joked with us, took our joking, and quickly became a part of our family. Ross also took on the burden of having a private conversation with my brother to help him understand that he would not be going home and what that meant. I know that had to have been a tough emotional conversation that Ross didn’t have to do, but he did. We were all very sad when Ross told us that he only had 3 more shifts before he would be on family leave. We were happy for him, but sad for our loss of him as a person. All the staff and doctors gave exemplary care to my brother, but Ross was a cut above the rest. My brother passed away within two days of being admitted to the hospital. I want to nominate Ross for the DAISY Award because in my 67 years of life and dealing with medical situations with my husband, kids, mother, and father, I have never seen a nurse who went beyond in the care of a patient, treating you like family and making you feel heard and safe like Ross. He is truly an awesome nurse and man; he understands what his kindness, fulfilling his duties, and going above and beyond his job really meant to us as a family.
