His innovative teaching methods are a testament to his creativity and passion for education. He developed a unique approach to practicing head-to-toe assessment skills for a large group, utilizing system-based cards to create a fun and engaging learning experience. This demonstrates his ability to think outside the box and tailor his teaching to meet the diverse needs of learners.
This nurse’s connection with new nurses is strong because he has fostered growth beyond nursing education. He empathizes with novice professionals by guiding them to effectively communicate with peers and leadership. He guides learners in professionalism, including attendance, uniform, and conduct. Using various formats, this nurse establishes and clearly communicates expected outcomes while encouraging stakeholder input in developing outcomes. He excels in his ability to think critically and adapt expected outcomes based on learning ability and conditions while providing constructive feedback. His role bridges leadership and learners, making him a key advocate for relationship-centered outcomes.
The number of people who rely on him as a sounding board speaks to the effectiveness of his communication. He remains open to hearing nurse learners discuss the stressors, such as family, cultural, financial, and social factors, that affect their ability to learn and work. If he does not know how to help, he will not rest until he finds someone who can. His responsibilities take him through visitor-facing areas where he frequently is seen guiding lost people, helping the search for misplaced keys and items, and answering general questions, often with a lighthearted joke and a reference to one of the local sports teams he passionately follows.
He chairs the specialty nursing practice workgroup, driving improvements in certification rates, practice standards, and patient care. His leadership keeps the team engaged and exemplifies role modeling, compassion, and leadership, making him truly deserving of this recognition.
This nurse was essential in years of progress for our learners, including program re-structuring, competency evaluation, and integration of skill and simulation checkpoints into the program. He considers adult learners' needs by maximizing various teaching methods. The Progressive Care Units represent an amazing range of diversity educationally, culturally, and experientially. Meeting the needs of a diverse group on a spectrum of nursing topics is a strength of this nurse.
He passionately shares his knowledge as an experienced Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support instructor. Multiple times, he has participated as a bilingual member of an interdisciplinary team, serving the community by teaching emergency response and hands-only CPR for community groups of primarily Spanish-speaking adults. He can share this love of lifelong learning because of his commitment to professional development. When transitioning from a staff role to the Nursing Professional Development specialty, he obtained his bachelor’s in nursing and is currently completing his master’s degree in nursing education.
He values teamwork and often says, “I really value those around me because I know that others are always making time to help me, so I can pay it back to those who need it.” The nurse residents are the biggest beneficiaries of his collaborative efforts to build working relationships by incorporating Bridge program faculty from various interdisciplinary specialties, roles, and service lines.
This nurse exceeds ICARE values. Among many examples, this stands out. One learner faced an unexpected situation that led to their being unable to complete their residency program on the established timeline. He visited the learner, offering emotional support, and purchased supplies the learner needed as gifts. He stayed connected with the learner while on leave and made sure the learner completed the necessary steps to return. Including paying for the learner to obtain the necessary certification, and to return to work. He individualized a plan for the learner to resume their training and reinforce missing content. Because of this nurse, the learner had everything they needed to be successful and is now practicing independently as a registered nurse.

This Educator has carried over his care from being a PCA, to a Staff nurse, Floor Educator, into Nurse Residency Associate Manager. As an Educator, he was always on top of the needs of the residents. He has this calming effect when dealing with any situation, especially difficult situations. We had one resident who, after being hired, said she could not adhere to the schedule given. He patiently talked with her and asked her if she recalled what the managers said about scheduling requirements. Once he talked with her, there were no more issues with her and scheduling. He leaves his phone number with the residents and even assists them after they are no longer residents. This shows how empathetic and compassionate he is. His communication is very effective. As soon as he sees there is a problem with education in the department, he immediately reaches out to the managers of the unit with a solution on how to better the nurses. One such instance was when the nurses received a patient with a nerve block and the unit had never had one before, he researched and came of with an education plan to educate the unit. Nurses will reach out to him with confidence that he will hear them and assist them to get the answer they need. We often receive a text or email from him, even when he is off, explaining that a nurse, nurse fellow, or nurse resident has reached out to him with an issue. If he can help, he does, and if he can't, he finds someone who can. His character has not changed. He started on our unit as a PCA and through each step he has remained a committed individual to learning and educating. As a nurse, he was one of the best preceptors that we had. Those he precepted all complimented him on his teaching ability. He took that into the education department. He is beyond accountable. This is seen is his great stewardship of encouraging the highest of standards to nurses as well as PCAs. His commitment is seen in his productivity. We have kept many nurses just because of his captive nature in assisting anyone in need. The staff has seen him jump in to assist with a Code or Rat Call and ensure that the situation is under control before he leaves. He is by far one of the best educators at Parkland and his friendly smile welcomes others. He is the epitome of our ICARE values.
