After (Mark's) first night, Dad said he slept through the night, pain-free for the first time in five months.
Our dad was in home hospice care for five-and-a-half weeks. With us for most of those 38 days was Mark. And for that, we are grateful. Our 75-year-old dad moved into hospice after five months of battling infections and multiple complications. He had significant wounds on his lower back and feet. He had been in and out of hospitals and nursing facilities and was in constant pain. From day one, Mark focused on managing Dad's pain. He made sure Dad had the right mattress, positioning, and dosage and frequency of medications. After the first night, Dad said he slept through the night, pain-free for the first time in five months. Mark moved Dad with care when changing his wounds and examining him. Through Mark's efforts, we were able to enjoy more than a month of quality time with Dad, allowing us to talk, tell stories, reminisce, and say goodbye. We all, including Dad, looked forward to Mark's visits. He was the consummate professional, always taking time to explain what he was doing, what he was seeing, and what we could expect. More than that, he got to know Dad, my mom, and our entire family. He didn't dwell on the sad circumstances but rather took a genuine interest in Dad and our whole family. What stood out most was the way he treated our dad with dignity and compassion. He never talked down to him or shaded information. Mark always shook Dad's hand, whether greeting him, saying goodbye, or both. That gesture meant a lot--signaling friendship, care, and support. Mark was also there for our family, both in terms of making sure we had support, but also making the home visits go smoothly. He always called ahead and was prompt. He was organized, including with supplies and medication, taking the time to explain what we needed to do. In short, Mark helped make a very difficult time a little less so. We appreciate his hard work and devotion. On behalf of our dad and entire family, we sincerely thank Mark and hope he understands the impact he has on his patients and their families.
