When I wasn’t feeling well, she offered to go down to the cafeteria to get me soup and made me a cup of tea.
We live in a world where judging others is basically taught to us from a young age. Most of us have heard our parents, at some point in our lives, say things like "I can't believe they're wearing that in public," talking about a random woman in the grocery store. Or the fact that the first thing people ask when we tell them about our crushes is "Are they cute?" Unfortunately, that's the society we live in. In this society, it's second nature to judge someone, but luckily, there are a small number of people who don't follow this societal standard. Nurses like Andrea Shoenfelt, who don't judge, inspire me to be more accepting and less judgmental, and I want to start on the journey of making a better life for myself.

I was a patient on Gagnon 5 and then Gagnon A. I have to say, most of the staff were nice to me, but I felt judged. I am an alcoholic and have been for a long time. I have made many bad decisions. I suffer from PTSD from my time in Afghanistan. My brother just died; he was my only family. I am homeless. You see, lots to be judged about. I wanted to write something about a nurse who took care of me right before I was discharged to the Market Street Mission. Luckily for me, I have a cell phone and saw this nomination in a packet of information given to me. I had to write something. I want to start out by saying thank you to the judgment-free nurse for making me feel like I was someone special. I felt like she genuinely wanted what's best for me, and I really appreciate that. In a world full of people telling you their opinions and constantly judging you for your choices. Andrea, you are a shining star. The world needs more people like you.

I could tell she was busy that weekend, but she came in, sat on the couch, and took the time to talk to me about my life and my future plans. In addition to telling me about my medical care, she took the time to learn about me. That was something really special. When I wasn’t feeling well, she offered to go down to the cafeteria to get me soup and made me a cup of tea. She helped me wash up after I vomited all over my gown. Not once did she make it seem like a burden. She washed my hair and brushed it for me. Even gave me a little back rub to try and make me feel better. I am so thankful for her. You see, this nurse gave me some sense of normalcy, which was rare. Thank you for the encouragement and kindness. Thank you for everything that you did to treat me. You’re truly an extraordinary nurse!
