The family returned to their homes after the patient's passing, and we will likely never see or hear from them again, but I know that Sarah's actions that night will stay in their hearts for the rest of their lives.
We had a patient in the ICU whose family had to make the difficult decision to withdraw life support and allow the patient to pass comfortably. The patient was young, the illness was unexpected, and the family had flown in from hundreds of miles away. The family made this decision in the middle of the night, and they asked for a priest to provide spiritual support before withdrawing care.

At that time of night, we were not able to get in touch with a priest, and the family didn't want to prolong the patient's passing any longer. Sarah made the incredibly gracious decision, when asked, to come down to a different unit, to a patient and family she had never met before, to pray with the family. Her words were so moving, and it was incredibly meaningful to the patient's family. Her decision to step up and provide spiritual support for complete strangers in their time of sorrow speaks volumes about who Sarah is -- as a nurse, and also as a human being. The family returned to their homes after the patient's passing, and we will likely never see or hear from them again, but I know that Sarah's actions that night will stay in their hearts for the rest of their lives.
