Emily also demonstrates her deep compassion and service mindset by volunteering her own vacation time to support children with special needs as a chaperone and teacher at an out-of-state camp.
It is with great admiration and gratitude that I nominate Emily Black for the DAISY Nurse Educator Award. Since transitioning into her educator role in August 2024, Emily has flourished—displaying unwavering dedication, compassion, creativity, and excellence in every facet of her work. She embodies the essence of an exceptional nurse educator, meeting and exceeding all the criteria this award represents.

Empathy and Compassion - Emily creates a safe and supportive learning environment for all—from new graduate RNs to experienced nurses, MSTs, PCTs, volunteers, and summer interns. She approaches each learner with kindness, understanding, and patience, ensuring they feel valued, respected, and confident. Even during her transition into the educator role, she jumped into onboard not just her home unit’s staff, but also new hires for 2NE as that wing opened—doing so with grace, warmth, and compassion.

Effective Communication Skills - Emily has a remarkable ability to communicate complex clinical and educational concepts in a clear, approachable, and practical manner. Her individualized approach ensures that every learner feels comfortable asking questions, engaging in dialogue, and applying knowledge confidently at the bedside. She consistently provides constructive feedback that empowers staff to grow without discouragement.

Role Model and Mentor - Emily leads by example, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and accountability. She actively nurtures leadership potential in others and has inspired many team members to explore educational and developmental roles through shadowing and mentorship. She has been instrumental in promoting and guiding participation in the Professional Excellence Program (PEP), increasing the number of participants from 12 last year to a projected 15–18 this year.

Adaptable and Flexible - Emily’s teaching style is dynamic and learner-focused. She adapts her methods to meet a variety of learning styles and competencies, ensuring every team member receives meaningful, targeted education. Whether onboarding staff for new units or revamping house-wide educational materials, Emily meets every challenge with flexibility and innovation.

Commitment to Lifelong Learning - Emily models a true love of learning. She obtained her MEDSURG-BC certification and is currently preparing for NPD-BC certification through participation in the NPD University. She attends ANPD Lunch & Learns, participates in NPD collaborative groups, and has joined FONL, attending the annual conference. Her commitment to professional growth is both personal and contagious.

Establishes Learning Outcomes and Provides Constructive Feedback - Her teaching sessions are well-structured, with clear learning outcomes and intentional follow-up. She developed an innovative professional development spreadsheet that tracks team performance audits, certifications, recognitions, and growth milestones—serving as an invaluable tool for meaningful staff evaluations and development discussions.

Builds Collaborative Relationships - Emily is deeply involved in interdisciplinary collaboration and committee work. She participates in Fall Prevention, Suicide Risk, CPPC, CDIT, NPQC, and the Education Committee. She works closely with pharmacy, wound care, infection prevention, HR, respiratory, and lab services to ensure holistic and regulatory-compliant education for staff. She also collaborates with local nursing schools to coordinate student preceptorships and onboard volunteers.

Innovation and Leadership in Practice - Emily’s creativity shines in every project she undertakes. From developing engaging educational tools like “Penguins for Purposeful Rounding” and interactive games to creating visually impactful Navori boards and personalized orientation binders—her work consistently enhances the learning experience. Her Smartsheet PTO request system, revamped education materials, and her CPR training sessions with Venice High students are just a few examples of her innovative spirit.

Beyond her professional role, Emily also demonstrates her deep compassion and service mindset by volunteering her own vacation time to support children with special needs as a chaperone and teacher at an out-of-state camp. This speaks volumes about her character and heart.

Emily Black is not only a remarkable nurse educator—she is a beacon of inspiration, excellence, and empathy. Her influence is felt throughout the unit, the hospital system, and the broader nursing community. We are incredibly fortunate to have her as part of our team, and she is most deserving of the DAISY Nurse Educator Award.
