She was quick to come to J’s aid and give him the time he needed to be comfortable with the anesthesia and process.
Candace was amazing with my five-year-old son J, who came in with a foot injury that required stitches. I work in healthcare as a respiratory therapist, and I never tell the care team because I want to be genuine and not take away from their knowledge and skills. Candace was able to form a relationship with my son and make him comfortable. J has autism and requires extra patience. This information was not divulged; however, she was quick to come to J’s aid and give him the time he needed to be comfortable with the anesthesia and process. Stitching a five-year-old's foot requires lots of patience. Despite her stressful workload, she never rushed through our care. When I felt sick with worry, she provided me with time to take a bathroom break and snuck me a snack while she sat beside my son. She was completely transparent with her communication and explained why we had to wait so long. J was hesitant at best with his pain medication, and she sat there with us quite some time and allowed me to work with J to get him to take the medication without forcing it or creating stress for my child. J required multiple attempts to get his foot stitched, and not once did she show any frustration. We finally got it done, and it was during what I know to be a shift change. Candace never showed any signs of disgruntlement, even though she was being held past her scheduled shift. In fact, J was still feeling the effect of his sedation when we were ready to be discharged, and she provided us with a wheelchair and buckled him into his booster seat, checking with me to be sure he was properly restrained. The words of encouragement she provided to me, knowing I had other children at home, are what got me through my worries. When I got in the car, I realized it was past 7 pm. She could have easily handed it off to the next nurse, but instead, she took time to see us to the end. Since I work in emergency care/trauma and have a base knowledge of nursing care, I can get easily uneasy if I don’t feel comfortable with the skill set of the staff. The entire team was capable and so much more. I felt so comfortable and never doubted my choice to carry him to the local hospital versus a children’s hospital! I cannot tell you how amazing Candace is at her job and how much effort it takes to not only work with the adult population but to be able to switch gears and care for a child! My son is still talking about Candace, whom he jokingly named Candace poopy head!
