Ashley Trochez, a newly graduated nurse, exemplified extraordinary compassion, bravery, and advocacy that directly impacted a patient's safety and well-being. Despite being early in her career, Ashley stood up with strength and conviction in a situation many seasoned professionals might hesitate to challenge. Ashley cared for a patient who was categorized as a mental health patient.

However, she had deep concerns that the patient might be a victim of abuse by her significant other, concerns she felt were not being taken seriously by the care team, including senior nurses and physicians. Refusing to let those concerns be ignored, Ashley courageously stood her ground, advocating firmly for the patient and refusing to be dismissed. Her advocacy did not stop at the end of her shift.

Ashley went home still thinking about the patient’s safety, and the next day, although she was scheduled for a different assignment, she requested to return to care for the same patient. She wanted to ensure that the patient was not overlooked, and that her voice, a voice that had been silenced, was heard through Ashley’s. Because of Ashley’s unwavering commitment and determination, the patient received the care and attention she needed and was ultimately protected from harm.

Ashley was the voice for someone who didn’t have one, and her advocacy made a life-changing difference. Ashley’s strength, empathy, and patient-centered care are nothing short of extraordinary. She may be new to nursing, but her actions reflect the highest ideals of our profession.
