Even though Ashley is not a formally trained NICU RN, she moved, assessed, and responded as if she had been doing it for years.
I am nominating Ashley for a DAISY Award not only for exceptional nursing skills but also for her compassion, dedication, and intuitiveness for her patients. Ashley received a report on a 4-week-old baby that was admitted to our medical-surgical floor. She went in to assess the baby and immediately knew that something was wrong. She observed the infant. It appeared lethargic, had circumferential cyanosis, and she also witnessed an apneic period. She immediately alerted me. I walked in the door and knew she was absolutely spot on. A rapid response was called, and the infant was taken to the ER.
Even though Ashley is not a formally trained NICU RN, she moved, assessed, and responded as if she had been doing it for years. Anticipating the infants' needs before anyone else. Picking up little clues that no one else was picking up, trying to piece together what was happening. She bravely took the leading role in this situation. I was in awe of her ability to think on her feet in such a stressful situation. Never wavering or giving up, she pushed all of us to strive for our very best. Ashley gave all of us in that room the confidence to get things done that were needed to save this beautiful baby. I knew that I was in the company of one of our best OB nurses, and I trusted her implicitly, which helped to calm my anxiety and keep me focused. Ashley stayed with that baby for the remainder of that shift. I am so proud and honored to work alongside such an amazing caregiver, woman, and human! Thank you, Ashley, for your confidence, your leadership, and your humor.
