Emma's presence truly made this unimaginable experience so much less horrific: I felt like someone was holding our family, bearing witness, and acknowledging that we had needs.
While I only met Emma for one day, she went above and beyond for our family when we went through an unimaginable event: two weeks after shockingly losing my 38-year-old sister-in-law to a pulmonary embolism, our family found ourselves at the same hospital again (a hospital most of us have been going to all of our lives), this time with our grandparents who were in a horrible head-on car crash. While Grandpa was relatively stable but still in the SICU, it became clear after a full day of surgery that Grandma would not be living much longer. Our family all gathered together at the SICU to visit both of them and to say goodbye to the matriarch of the family, just days after the funeral for my sister-in-law, and one day before the cemetery burial would take place (now without both grandparents). Of course, number one, Emma took incredible care of our grandmother's comfort and health while she was approaching death. This was so tremendously appreciated. Grandma was comfortable and safe. But what really touched me was how Emma saw all of us, our whole family of multiple generations. She saw our grandmother and understood who she had been in life. She saw what we needed for her to be comfortable. She helped Grandma die in a way that matches our family values and her unique personhood. Emma was attentive, checking in on us and Grandma throughout while also giving us privacy and space. When I asked her for anything, her approachable and kind demeanor showed me that I could truly ask for anything we needed without feeling like we were putting her out. As our grandma's last hours passed, I saw that we could depend on Emma: I could just step out of the room and she would be there to guide me. There were so many of us gathered around Grandma. Emma found ways to fit all of us in Grandma's room at once when the time came for that. She coordinated with Grandpa's room to allow him to see Grandma one more time. Emma's presence truly made this unimaginable experience so much less horrific: I felt like someone was holding our family, bearing witness, and acknowledging that we had needs. We never felt like we were being "too much" even though there were so many of us there, visiting our two grandparents, each of us with our own unique needs that were arising out of this overwhelming situation. I love that she really saw our grandma for who she is, too. Emma just "got it". She made me feel like everything that we asked for made sense: we had an angel there on earth right outside the hospital room door, waiting for us if any needs arose. I will always remember how much Emma's experience aided our experience.
