Approachable, patient, nurturing, and possessing an unshakeable calm demeanor during all situations, Jesse is universally revered by the clinical staff, her colleagues, and nursing leadership across the Obstetrical service.
It is with immense admiration that we nominate Jessenia (Jesse) Ciavarella. Jesse is not just an educator; she is a beacon of knowledge, dedication, and compassion, embodying the very best of nursing and truly serving as a transformative leader within our institution and across the Northwell System. An indispensable role model for all!
As a tenured Nurse Educator, Jesse is renowned for her profound knowledge, unwavering dedication, and compassionate approach. She consistently exceeds the expectations of her daily educational responsibilities of structured classes, rounding, or on-the-spot education. Her influence was critically evident during a pivotal period for our hospital. Jesse was instrumental in the monumental preparation of our staff for the Joint Commission Advanced Perinatal Care Certification survey. Through countless educational classes, unit rounds, and thorough chart audits, Jesse's profound knowledge and expertise contributed to LIJMC becoming the first hospital in the System to achieve this prestigious certification. Remarkably, while working diligently towards this achievement, Jesse simultaneously assisted with preparing the staff for the rigorous Baby Friendly re-designation, which required intensive, consistent education over several months.
At the conclusion of the JC Advanced Perinatal Care survey, a Code OB was called on a mother suffering a cardiac arrest who had just delivered twins. Jesse ran to the scene and, with her typical calm demeanor, took charge of the patient’s resuscitative efforts. She remained at the patient’s bedside hours past her shift, closely monitoring the patient and administering necessary care, all while providing support to the staff during this stressful and emotional time.
Jesse's commitment to advancing nursing practice and sharing her expertise is truly unparalleled. She completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in 2023, and she just obtained her sixth specialty certification (OB Emergencies) – a testament to her lifelong dedication to learning. Her pioneering work in the OB Diabetes Champion program at LIJMC led to her lecturing at the 2024 Association of Diabetes Care and Education (ADCES) Conference in New Orleans. Jesse also presented posters at the past three Northwell Regional Perinatal Conferences (2023, 2024, 2025). Topics included Hemorrhage Management, Perinatal Bereavement, the OB Diabetes Champion course, and Methods to Decrease Newborn Hyperthermia.
Beyond her numerous departmental responsibilities, Jesse extends her impact across the Northwell System. As one of two System-wide National Certification Corporation (NCC) Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) comprehensive review course instructors, she has taught and prepared more than 200+ nurses to successfully pass the national EFM exam. In addition, Jesse assists with the coordination of multidisciplinary drills at LIJMC for critical OB scenarios such as shoulder dystocia, post-partum hemorrhage, hypertensive emergencies, and malignant hyperthermia. Her expertise in these situations led her to Florida, where she became one of two instructors for a high-fidelity simulation OB mannequin that was recently gifted to LIJMC, further elevating our interdisciplinary emergency preparedness.
Jesse's compassion and empathy extend beyond clinical education to the emotional well-being of our team and our patients. She was instrumental in establishing our Perinatal Bereavement Team, providing crucial education to empower nurses to compassionately support families during their most difficult moments. Jesse went one step further and transformed the bereavement room into a warm and healing environment for families by decorating the walls and obtaining donations of layettes in various colors and sizes with the intent to provide comfort and peace when there are no words.
Approachable, patient, nurturing, and possessing an unshakeable calm demeanor during all situations, Jesse is universally revered by the clinical staff, her colleagues, and nursing leadership across the Obstetrical service. She is an asset to our patients, our staff, and our hospital. For her extraordinary contributions, her unwavering dedication, and her profound impact as a Nurse Educator, Jessenia Ciavarella is an exemplary recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurse Educators . We believe she exemplifies everything this award represents, and it would be fitting for her to be recognized as the first Nurse Educator at LIJMC to receive this prestigious honor.
