I am nominating Jordan on behalf of his charge nurse for a DAISY Award for his incredible compassion towards a patient in our ICU unit. Recently, our unit cared for a patient with significant psychiatric needs who required around-the-clock nursing care and was having acute psychosis. On the patient’s day of discharge, several staff members, including security personnel, were concerned that the patient would exhibit escalating behaviors that could create a safety situation, potentially endangering himself or others.

Jordan was noted by his team to expertly manage the situation – Jordan communicated with the patient in a manner that was empathetic, kind, and professional. Jordan was able to connect with this patient and explain their care plan in a way that helped the patient better understand the rationale behind their discharge plan, allowing them to safely leave the building to receive the treatment they needed. After discharge, some nurses might have erroneously celebrated the departure of a patient who required such a heavy lift in nursing care and security presence. But not Jordan. Jordan relayed nothing but compassion for this patient’s situation and was professional in his communication about the patient’s diagnoses and behaviors. Jordan truly went above and beyond in ensuring this patient’s understanding of their care plan and helping facilitate a safe discharge.
