M was admitted to the hospital on Thursday. By his first weekend, he was confused and disoriented. Lisa was his nurse on Sunday through Tuesday that week. She would sit outside his room and listen to see if he needed anything. Lisa would walk past the room and just look in on him. Once, when she did, he had an odd look on his face. So, she asked if he was okay. He told her he thought he was confused. She sat down and began talking to him in a calm and gentle manner. Eventually, he remembered where he was and why he was here. I never worried when I knew Lisa was his nurse. That’s the hardest part when a family member is in the hospital; you can't be there and never know if they are getting the care you want. I always had peace of mind when she was his nurse. I knew she was taking care of him the way I would want. All that, but Lisa also doesn’t coddle her patients. She is kind when they need kindness and strict when they need tough love. She is not afraid to help them help themselves. Lisa is a valuable asset to this hospital and deserves to be recognized and celebrated.
