Her positivity poured into me, and my desperation fled.
After almost 2 weeks in the hospital, I came to learn how desperation negatively impacts healing. This isn't a story about one distinct act by Alexa, but all her actions combined. Alexa never made me feel desperate; instead, I was comforted and healed while in her care. Not only was Alexa knowledgeable about the medicines she administered, but she also listened to my concerns regarding my body taking on too much. Alexa was one of many nighttime nurses that I had during my painful days in the hospital. When she came on shift, I knew I would be cared for... it would be a good night (which is as valuable as gold in the hospital). Hospital nights are scary, painful times when you're hooked to IV antibiotics, liquid pain medication, drains, and you can't leave your bed to use the bathroom. Waiting for nurses to the point of an accident is a common occurrence. That was never the case with Alexa. She gracefully juggled all of her patients and promptly attended to my needs without fail. She went above and beyond at every turn. In advance of the required timelines, she redressed my bandages, changed my IV when it felt slightly uncomfortable, and helped me cover myself in plastic to take a much-needed shower that was a week overdue. Her positivity poured into me, and my desperation fled. I healed in part thanks to her. I wish all nurses had Alexa's stamina, grace, and skill. It's inspiring.
