Julia kept it all together with the sincerest smile and gracious bedside manner I have ever witnessed.
My husband was admitted to this unit shortly after having a device implanted for end-stage heart failure. Unfortunately, my husband became extremely ill with a fever of 105 and was found to have acquired sepsis. Julia was our nurse on the second night and was nothing short of amazing as she cared for him with genuine compassion.
Julia must have been in and out of his room over a hundred times that night as she followed orders to balance my husband’s fragile and delicate condition. Between giving loads of diuretics and following with albumin and various lab draws, etc., Julia kept it all together with the sincerest smile and gracious bedside manner I have ever witnessed. There was a moment in the early hours of the morning when she looked over at me and assured me that she and the team were going to do everything within their power to get us through this horrific night.
When it looked as if my husband was not going to make it through all of this, Julia sat next to me and listened to my concerns patiently. As I cried uncontrollably, Julia asked if it would be okay to give me a hug in the moment. Her positive energy and bubbly personality were just what my husband and I needed to get through it all.
A few weeks later, Julia came to visit my husband and me during her shift. It was then that we learned that she had two really difficult back-to-back shifts prior to caring for my husband that fateful night. I’ll never forget her expressing thanks to us after all the hard work and diligence she displayed to get us through it all. She told me that she needed us, just as much, if not more, than we needed her. I knew in this moment that this phenomenal nurse deserved so much more than a simple thank-you and a hug.
Julia is a true example of what being present as a nurse should look like, and she is truly a credit to the profession. I hope she always remembers how much she is appreciated and is needed as an incredible OHICU RN. Thank you so much, “Jules.” Because of the hard work of Julia and the entire staff, my husband was able to receive a heart and kidney transplant. He’s doing amazing.
