John (Ron) continued to provide compassionate care and de-escalated the situation by explaining the situation, collecting labs, and involving the team.
John (Ron) is an exceptional nurse who provides high-quality care at the 7A/B Multi-Organ Transplant Unit during his shifts. He actively asks what his patient's needs are, attentively listens, and makes an effort to meet not only his patient's needs. He also doesn't hesitate to help other nurses meet their patients' needs. He sets a high standard as a caring and compassionate nurse. One example of his exceptional compassion was when a post-kidney patient had bowel and urination control issues post-op. The patient had a bowel movement and urinated on the floor while transferring to the commode. John did not hesitate to clean the patient and the floor while providing verbal assurance, protecting the patient's dignity. The patient continued to have urination issues, where the patient could not aim to pee in the urinal, as he had gout in his fingers, and urine would get spilled on the floor. John assured the patient every time and helped him use the urinal.
Another example is when a post-lung transplant patient said that they were not feeling well and started having respiratory difficulty due to anxiety from the concerns. The family saw this, got upset, and out of concern demanded hydromorphone for anxiety. John acknowledged the concerns, performed an assessment, and provided education that hydromorphone can help slow breathing rate but is not for anxiety. The patient received the appropriate medication for anxiety. On the next shift, the patient started showing signs of sepsis. During this, the patient showed signs of confusion, such as swearing at nurses, and the patient's family showed how upset they were about the deterioration. John continued to provide compassionate care and de-escalated the situation by explaining the situation, collecting labs, and involving the team. The patient was able to receive the appropriate care promptly, and this reassured the family member. The family member continues to come and say hi to John.
