Yet, even in the midst of chaos, she paused to take a quiet moment of silence to honor the child.
I am a contracted hospital sitter for the Department of Family and Protective Services, and I recently worked a night shift alongside Vivian, the night nurse. During our shift, the patient was in critical condition and was expected to code. This was a new and emotional experience for me. I had never been present when a patient passed away while providing sitting services. At the beginning of my shift, I spoke with Vivian, who was kind, patient, and incredibly thoughtful. She took the time to ask how I wanted to handle the situation. She asked whether I preferred to step out or stay in the room. I wasn't sure how to respond, but eventually, I told her I wanted to remain with the patient throughout the entire process. She respected my decision and reassured me. She even offered to close the curtains if things became too overwhelming.

Although she mentioned she would check on the patient about once an hour, Vivian went far beyond that. She came in every 10 to 15 minutes, consistently monitoring his condition and doing everything in her power to provide care. She sought additional support from other staff and remained calm and focused, even under the intense pressure of trying to save this child's life. Despite everything happening around her, she still took the time to answer my questions with warmth and patience. When the patient passed away, I could see that it affected her deeply. Yet, even in the midst of chaos, she paused to take a quiet moment of silence to honor the child. That simple, compassionate act touched my heart. As my shift ended, I stopped to tell her how amazing she was. Despite her own grief, she still looked at me and asked, "Are you sure you don't need anything?" At that moment, I thought to myself, This woman is truly an angel. I cannot emphasize this enough. I don't know how often nurses face situations like this, but I do know that Vivian handled it with extraordinary compassion, professionalism, and grace. She is everything a nurse should be.
