We have been so fortunate to have Zoie as my daughter’s nurse several evenings since she arrived here. There are so many wonderful things I could say about Zoie. From the moment she came in to meet my daughter, she radiated such joy and immediately gave both my daughter and us, her parents, a sense of comfort and trust that she was in good hands.
My daughter is nonverbal due to muscle weakness, but Zoie takes the time to truly connect with her. She talks to her, waits patiently for her nonverbal responses, and even jams out to Taylor Swift right alongside her. She surprises us with fun hairstyles that always make my daughter smile when we come in each morning. My personal favorite was the space buns she did, such a thoughtful way to help my daughter feel good about herself, despite being in the hospital.
Beyond her incredible bedside manner, Zoie is an exceptional nurse. She is extremely knowledgeable about my daughter’s complex medical needs and asks great questions to learn more about her. She also makes sure to respectfully ask how we prefer things to be done so she can keep my daughter’s care as consistent and “normal” as possible.
Zoie is always on top of everything and doesn’t miss a beat. When my daughter experienced an arrhythmia, Zoie recognized it immediately and acted quickly. It was soon determined that my daughter’s potassium was critically low. Zoie handled the situation with calm professionalism and confidence, working efficiently to get it resolved.
I never once doubted that my daughter was in good hands, even when I needed to step out for a meal. I was actually able to sleep better at night knowing that Zoie was caring for her. My daughter is a very medically fragile child, ventilator-dependent, and living with several rare diagnoses that can easily make the most experienced nurses nervous.
Zoie is a true natural. She's compassionate, capable, and confident. She has such a special way of bringing joy, comfort, and confidence to both her patients and their families. We are so grateful for you and hope you stay at the University of Iowa for a very long time.
Well done, Zoie!
