Spenser came to the CICU this past summer of 2024 as an experienced RN who also served in the armed forces for eight years. Spenser has excelled on the unit and has become a strong team member.
Spenser cared for a patient who was also a military veteran and was electing to pursue comfort measures with his care. After discussing with the family and patient, who approved of their loved one being honored, Spenser came in on his day off to honor the patient. When the patient passed away, he presented the family with a flag to honor him.
In addition to this, Spenser is taking on a project to help recognize military veterans who are hospitalized at Strong. He used past experiences as a travel RN, drawing from practices he has seen at other institutions, to guide this project. His project will entail displaying a flag outside the patient’s room once they have agreed to a series of questions indicating that they would like to be honored.
The Cardiovascular Center has approved trialing this project in hopes that it can become a hospital-wide initiative.
Great job, Spenser!
