Shanell Tucker is an extraordinary nurse, colleague, and friend. Her heart, dedication, and impact on others are undeniable and deeply appreciated.
I would like to nominate Shanell Tucker for the DAISY Award. Shanell is an extraordinary nurse who consistently goes above and beyond—not just for her patients and their families, but also for her coworkers. She is the kind of person who offers a hand without being asked, gives advice when it’s needed most, and always provides a shoulder to lean on. She is driven not only by compassion but by a desire to see others succeed. She constantly tells techs and new staff, “Don’t stop here—go back to school, go for more,” and she lives by those words. She’s an amazing tutor and motivator.

One specific moment that truly showcases Shanell’s heart and dedication involved a newly tracheostomy (trach) patient who was severely depressed about her condition. Shanell didn’t just care for her medically—she cared for her emotionally and mentally. She searched for and provided literature on self-care, sat with her, and encouraged her, telling her she still had so much to live for. The patient had a lot of questions and fears, and this is where Shanell put the “tech method” into full use: Teach, Educate, Talk, and Care.

She didn’t stop with the patient. Shanell spoke with the patient’s mother and fiancé as well, addressing their concerns. The fiancé even called into the patient’s room phone with more questions, and Shanell took the time to speak with him directly. She printed off helpful materials and reassured the patient that even after discharge, she could call the unit anytime with questions—and Shanell would walk her through whatever she needed help with. She also emphasized the importance of staying connected with her primary care physician and surgeon and even gave the patient her personal work schedule.

Four days later, that same patient called the unit in a panic. True to her word, Shanell took the call, calmly reassured her, contacted the physician’s after-hours service, and helped her get an appointment. That kind of follow-through and compassion is rare. Shanell didn’t just treat a condition—she treated a whole person and their family.

If that’s not DAISY Award-worthy, I don’t know what is. Shanell Tucker is an extraordinary nurse, colleague, and friend. Her heart, dedication, and impact on others are undeniable and deeply appreciated.
