Julia Owen demonstrated extraordinary compassion and made a profound difference in the life of the patient and family. The patient, a beloved matriarch, was surrounded by a devoted family, three daughters, sisters, and grandchildren—who decorated her hospital room with photos that celebrated her joyful life.

Sadly, after surgery, the patient faced significant complications. The family, already under emotional strain from the recent birth of a new baby and the memory of losing their father during a similarly bittersweet time, was devastated. On one especially difficult day, I had the privilege of caring for this patient alongside Julia. Her compassion and sensitivity stood out.

Julia went beyond clinical care—she connected deeply with the family, listening to their concerns, honoring their role as advocates, and involving them meaningfully in the plan of care. She treated their questions and emotions with respect. When they shared a deeply personal religious belief—that rainwater collected in a certain month could bring healing—Julia encouraged them to gently apply it to their mother’s skin, offering comfort and dignity in a way that honored their traditions.

Her empathy and openness made the family feel truly seen and supported. Witnessing Julia’s care that day inspired me to become a more compassionate nurse. She made a lasting impact.
