I am a fellow RN, and Sarah was my "neighbor" and had a patient assignment next to mine. There were multiple instances when I was in another patient room providing patient care, and Sarah tended to my critically ill, intubated trauma patient. The trauma patient was intubated and had agitation issues. She heard the ventilator alarm go off and helped address the patient's needs.
She took the time to find out what the intubated patient was gesturing and allowed him to write on a whiteboard. Despite our attempts to soothe the patient, he continued to get more hypertensive and restless. The providers ordered a midazolam drip, so I went to the Omnicell to get the medication. Sarah stayed with the patient, held his hand, and reassured him that we were getting additional medications. The patient ultimately settled down with the Versed drip. Sarah held his hand the entire time I was addressing his medications, titrating, and giving boluses.
Sarah spent at least 30 minutes in my patient's room. She showed patience and compassion to a patient who was not even her own.
