I am recognizing Emily Kesler at Centra Bariatrics in Lynchburg, Virginia, as an outstanding, thoughtful, and extremely patient person/nurse. Here is my story.  I was told by my cardiologist that I should look into bariatric surgery. Upon calling Centra Hospital, I was told that my insurance would not cover the surgery. My heart literally sank. The lady (Emily Kesler) treated me with the utmost kindness and shared her deepest sympathy that, at this time, my insurance would not cover the procedure. I thanked her and told her I appreciate her patience and kindness, and I was just going to drop it. She encouraged me to keep my head up and to try again later on because in the medical field, things are always changing. Three years later, I retired. Then later, when I went back to my doctor, he once again told me to try to apply for bariatric surgery. So finally, 6 years later, I set up an appointment with the bariatric surgeon for Centra Hospital. After talking with him, we found out that Medicare would cover the surgery, so he set things in motion. First, a tele/video meeting with the nutritionist. After that, I had several meetings at the Centra office with the nutritionist. Then several visits with the psychiatrist. After several months, the psychiatrist and the nutritionist passed me and gave me their recommendation for surgery, along with my cardiologist and others. The point I want to make is, every time I would call back to the Centra bariatric office, I kept getting this one lady. And might I add, I called back many times because I was getting excited yet impatient while waiting. Each time this lady I'm referring to just had this special way of calming me down. But every time I'd forget to get her name. Then she made a huge mistake. She sent me a text message on her personal phone. I bet she wishes she had never done that, because every time I had a thought or a question, I would text her. LOL. My wife even told me that I shouldn't do that. I told my wife that this is the only person that I feel like I can get a straight answer from. Around this time, she called me and told me that the doctor had prescribed Ozempic due to I now had type 2 diabetes and some kidney issues. When I called my Pharmacy to check on the prescription, they were outrageously high, and I knew that I couldn't afford them. I texted back to this lady on her private number and told her that getting this medicine is absolutely out of the question. After several weeks of text and her calming me down, I was scheduled for a support meeting at the bariatric office, which went very well, I might add. The lady who schedules the support group meeting said her name was Emily. Just before the meeting started, this lady walked out and sat at the front desk, and as she was talking to the doctor. It suddenly dawned on me, after all these months, that this is the lady that I have been talking to. I excused myself from talking to the doctor, looked at her, and asked, Are you Emily? She replied, Yes. I deeply thanked her in front of the doctor and others at the support meeting for how she had been there since the very beginning to get me to this point. After the meeting had ended, I told her once again how awesome it was to finally put a face with the name. The next morning, she tells the doctor, "I woke up at 1am with (patient) on my mind".  The doctor replied with 2 questions. Why are you thinking about him at 1am, and whatta ya think his wife would think? LOL. She asked him, "Why can't we get him financial assistance for his meds"? He said, "Good idea, go ahead and try". She called me, got my info, and 6 days later, I was confirmed to get meds free. She went way further than the extra mile. At this point in my life, I needed something positive and HOPE, and through Centra and especially Emily Kesler, thank God it came. She is absolutely amazing, and she truly cares. I'd write this even if I'd been rejected for the meds. Thank you, and God bless you all.
