Jaci took it upon herself to drive to his house the next day and bring him food boxes, food for his cat, and sheets for his bed
Jaci is still a fairly new nurse who has quickly embraced her role and serves as a preceptor and a relief charge nurse. However, it is her true compassion and individualized care for a certain patient that continues to stand out. An older gentleman came in one night by ambulance. He was here for psych, which anyone will tell you are usually some of our most frustrating patients. This patient is a paranoid schizophrenic who was hearing voices and having an acute psychotic break. He had to be put under a PEC and was very worried about his cat at home. Jaci spent a lot of time with him, where he also divulged that he didn't have many clothes, sheets on his bed, food in his pantry, or food for his cat, which he was very worried about. He did not ask for a single thing. However, Jaci took it upon herself to drive to his house the next day and bring him food boxes, food for his cat, and sheets for his bed. There may have been pillows and other items as well. She personally put out some food for his cat so she would be taken care of while he was away getting treatment. This patient recently came back to our ER and was excited to see Jaci and thank her for everything she did for him. Somehow she found out that he doesn't have many clothes and is running out of food for his cat, who is now pregnant. She is now shopping for clothes, pajamas, socks, and underwear for him. She fully intends to bring him all of these items, as well as more food boxes. She also remains worried about the pregnant cat and has a plan to make sure the cat is taken care of. Jaci is a single mother of 3 children who never asks anyone for help. She deserves a DAISY Award for her extreme compassion and generosity towards this patient.
