Ellie and the rest of the nursing team were able to support the mom's wish to lie with the patient when he passed.
A previously healthy 21-year-old patient who arrived on the unit was cannulated for ECMO after contracting the flu. The patient's parents, grandparents, and extended family were understandably shocked, devastated, and somewhat guarded. They were trying to maintain hope in the face of increasingly discouraging news. Ellie cared for the patient for three consecutive days. Through her compassion and extraordinary care, Ellie developed a strong bond with the patient's mother, father, and extended family. Ellie participated in a family meeting the afternoon of her third shift with a patient. It was clear at that time that this young man's condition was becoming more and more tenuous. The next morning, on Ellie's scheduled day off, she volunteered to come in to care for this patient with the understanding that his condition may continue to deteriorate. Unfortunately, her intuition was correct, and this patient passed that day. Ellie and the rest of the nursing team were able to support the mom's wish to lie with the patient when he passed. I will not forget how his dad clung to Ellie while he sobbed at the unimaginable loss of his only child. Ellie's selfless offer to come in to care for the patient and family was a gift to them. She provided them peace, safety, and support on the worst day of their lives.
