I have witnessed Erik Martin, RN, care for two different challenging patients. Both times, the patient was exhibiting anxiety, anger, and fear about their diagnosis and treatment.

One patient raised her voice and yelled, "Are you any good?" and "Why should I trust you?" Erik exuded empathy, compassion, and professionalism. I witnessed Erik slowing down, sitting down with the patient, actively listening, and never rushing the interaction. He explained the treatments, what to expect, and how to get help when needed. He answered all the questions from the patient and family. If the patient didn't understand, he would find ways to communicate until the patient and family understood.

Erik Martin is a great representative of St. Michael's Cancer Center. It is a pleasure being his co-worker, seeing his humble attitude, and learning from his professionalism.

 Thank you, Erik, for being "that" nurse when times are down for the patient.
