She somehow found her way to me, stuck at home with COVID, and single-handedly navigated a way for me to be at my husband’s side in that isolation room. She advocated and cared for me so that I could advocate and care for my husband
I was thrilled to discover the DAISY Award, as I wondered how I might recognize one individual for the extraordinary, compassionate, and skillful care she provided during a devastating diagnosis and challenging circumstances.

Her name is Basilia Basin. It has been months since my husband fell at home and was brought by ambulance to OHSU. We are both elderly and at the time both COVID positive. Because of this, I was understandably asked to stay home and wait to hear from the ER, but I was very worried, especially since my husband had not been himself for quite a while, and I was worried that his recent abulia and remoteness would not help his providers get an accurate history.

I waited at home. At the end of that first long day at home, I received a call from the ER physician letting me know that he had a large brain tumor and was being admitted for surgery. He would be in isolation. Of all the care and attention he received in the ER and throughout his hospitalization, all of which was extraordinary, the one person who stood out and remains the shining star was Basilia.

She somehow found her way to me, stuck at home with COVID, and single-handedly navigated a way for me to be at my husband’s side in that isolation room. She advocated and cared for me so that I could advocate and care for my husband. I believe this upfront sequence of actions on my behalf made all the difference in my husband’s care throughout his hospitalization, as well as his eventual outcome.

While I recognize how fortunate he was to be cared for by an exceptionally skilled health care team, it was her single act of kindness and upfront attention to detail, recognizing and advocating for me, the family member, to be able to be with him, that will forever be remembered as the kindest of kindnesses.

Thank you for the opportunity to honor the many compassionate nurses, many of whom I had the privilege to work with. And thank you for giving me the opportunity to thank Basilia. They say that no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. It is my wish that this act of kindness be recognized as making such a difference then and even now.
