A few weeks ago, Aly was the charge nurse on labor and delivery. During her shift, there were many presentations to triage, several deliveries, a postpartum hemorrhage, a severe preeclampsia patient, and a preterm labor admit. Even though she never got to sit, and she felt behind the whole shift, she never showed one negative emotion. While taking care of all her duties, she eased the burdens of the rest of the team. No one felt overwhelmed or burned out, despite the high volume. All patients had a good outcome. And when I came back for another delivery, toward the end of her shift, I realized that this behavior is typical for Aly. That's why she is such a great leader. I wish I were more like her.

Aly has one of the most positive influences on the unit's culture. When she listens to someone, she makes it feel like that person is the only human in existence. She enjoys her work, and that is infectious.
