The Rehab department got a call from an ED Nurse (Jacob) this morning about borrowing the Rehab Department’s tub to baptize an ED patient. Shortly thereafter, Jacob and Logan came to my office to explain that one of their patients is at the end of life, has no family, and asked to be baptized with full submersion before they died. I told them I would verify with the therapist manager, Beth Hensarling, that no Rehab Patients would be using the tub, and after we confirmed it was available, we reached out to Jacob and said, “Absolutely.”
This is how they went above and beyond: Jacob and Logan reached out to us to see if it would be possible to use our bathtub for their patient to be baptized. Then these two nurses made all the arrangements by arranging for a pastor to come and perform the baptism, they transported their patient by stretcher, and brought staff to assist the patient and provide them a safe and respectful final wish.
This is what the DAISY Award was developed to recognize: “To celebrate, extraordinary, compassionate nurses that make a profound difference in the lives of people…”
Jacob and Logan certainly fit the DAISY Award Mission statement.
