RN Boone's interaction with the veteran is just one example of placing the veteran first, resulting in a positive outcome.
Scott Boone, RN, is being nominated for the DAISY Award for his devotion to the diabetes veteran. Mr. Boone's a Tele-endocrine RN with VISN 22. RN Boone enjoys educating veterans on their diabetes to include diabetes technology such as the continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGM), and assisting with troubleshooting insulin pump-related issues.

On multiple occasions, RN Boone spent time with a particular veteran to explain the function of the insulin pump and closed-loop system, as well as the veteran's responsibility in entering the correct amount of carbs into the pump for accurate insulin administration. The veteran would receive many pump alarms for insulin stacking or incorrect placement of the pump or CGM. Each time, RN Boone would listen to the veteran's concerns, explain the rationale for the alarm, and empower the veteran to take proactive measures to prevent the alarms in the future.

During a phone conversation with RN Boone, the veteran couldn't understand why the CGM results were not matching the glucose meter results. RN Boone used a real-life experience to facilitate the veteran's understanding by using the example of a military convoy high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) as the CGM results and the glucose meter results being the convoy lead Humvee going up a mountain. The convoy HMMWV trails the lead Humvee by 2-5 minutes, depending on the CGM device. The two results will rarely be the same. The veteran had a moment of revelation and understanding.

On many occasions, the veteran verbalized his gratitude for RN Boone's expertise and patience to the provider and team. The veteran has mentioned on several occasions that if it wasn't for RN Boone, he would have given up on the diabetes technology. With RN Boone's commitment to excellence, the veteran's hemoglobin A1c has improved by 1.5% over the past 6 months. RN Boone's interaction with the veteran is just one example of placing the veteran first, resulting in a positive outcome.
