Thank you, Sydney, for the heart and humanity you bring to our unit every day.
On Ellison 12, we have a patient who is 85 years old with a complex past medical history and has been on our unit for a little over a month. Throughout his stay, he has consistently screened positive for delirium and is on delirium precautions. Managing his care has required patience, consistency, and creativity from the team. Earlier this week, staff learned that this patient had spent his life as a chef specializing in French cuisine. Sydney took this personal detail and transformed it into a powerful moment of therapeutic connection.
I noticed her at the nurse’s station searching for recipes, and not long after, she had printed out several and was sitting at the bedside with the patient, engaging him in a conversation about cooking, his passion, and life's work. This kind of thoughtful, patient-centered care is the essence of nursing excellence. By tapping into what brought this patient joy, Sydney created a moment of familiarity and dignity amidst the confusion of delirium. These small but profound gestures can make a world of difference to our patients and remind us all of the power of human connection in healing.
Sydney's compassion, creativity, and ability to see the whole person behind the diagnosis are what make her an exceptional nurse and teammate. Her consistent dedication to going above and beyond exemplifies the spirit of the DAISY Award.
