She looked after my dad like he was her family.
A patient's daughter shared: "She looked after my dad like he was her family. Not only did she take care of him, but she also took care of us, too. When the situation got a bit nerve-racking, she still managed to keep it light so as not to freak any of us out, including my dad. Kayla made sure my dad got excellent care and that all our concerns were heard. She’s amazing!”
That is the very heart of bedside nursing - caring not only for the patient, but for the family as well. And in an Intermediate Care Unit, where patients require close monitoring and situations can change quickly, it takes resilience, calm under pressure, and a steady presence. Kayla brings all of that, and more.
Her manager, Nick, describes her as hardworking and passionate about patient care. She is precepting a new nurse—showing patience and dedication to teaching. She even created handouts to help explain policies and procedures, going the extra mile to ensure her colleagues succeed. Nick also notes that Kayla is thorough in her work and always willing to help with anything going on in the unit.
St. Catherine is fortunate to have such a committed nurse on 6W IMCU. Kayla, your compassion, your professionalism, and your dedication to both patients and colleagues make you an outstanding nurse. You remind us of the impact bedside nursing can have - not just on health outcomes, but on the human experience of care. On behalf of your patients, their families, your colleagues, and the leadership here at St. Catherine, congratulations on receiving The DAISY Award. You have earned this honor, and we are proud to celebrate you today.
